O-RAN Alliance's next Generation Research Group (nGRG) is a research task force founded by the O-RAN Alliance in June 2022. It comprises of members from major mobile operators, vendors from telecom, IT and DT industries, and well-known research institutes and universities around the world. The mission of nGRG is to leverage industry and academic 6G research efforts and determine how O-RAN will evolve to support 6G and beyond, considering regional research efforts, ITU-R, and 3GPP development.
The nGRG recently published three research reports. The blog on this reported:
These reports are the first set of publications from nGRG and address the use cases, AI/ML and security aspects of next generation mobile networks. The reports represent the insights of 26 distinguished nGRG participants on various topics for the evolution of Open RAN towards 6G:
- The first report, titled “O-RAN Towards 6G,” offers a comprehensive survey of 6G use cases across 13 categories, and evaluates 10 O-RAN related technical areas for their future development.
- The second report, titled “Research Report on Native and Cross-domain AI: State of the art and future outlook,” explores the potential of AI/ML for next generation networks. It provides a holistic view on how native and cross domain AI could be leveraged in next generation networks.
- The third report, titled “Research Report on Quantum Security,” analyses the quantum threats to 6G systems, and highlights the opportunities and challenges of quantum technologies for 6G security.
These reports can be downloaded from the Research Reports section of the O-RAN website. More research reports will be published under the same location.
