AI Machine Learning RAN Intelligent Controller for 6G Open RAN

There is a lot of working going on with regards to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in 3GPP. Almost all the Working Groups (see 3GPP tutorial), including both SA and RAN WGs, are now somehow engaged in AI/ML relevant features/capabilities standardization activities. To support and facilitate the efficient deployment and operation of AI/ML capabilities/features with the suitable AI/ML techniques in 5GS, the ML model and AI/ML inference function need to be managed throughout its entire lifecycle.

Dr Alex Jinsung Choi is Chairman of the O-RAN ALLIANCE and Senior Vice President, Group Technology and Head of T-Labs, which is the central Research & Development division of Deutsche Telekom. In addition, he is member of the Technology & Innovation management board, where he has responsibility for several strategic topics.

Last year he delivered a talk on AI, machine learning RAN intelligent controller for 6G. The abstract of the talk says:

AI and machine learning technologies are already widely used in ICT. In 6G, these technologies will be applied to various network services. The O-RAN Alliance is promoting the introduction of open architecture in mobile networks, particularly in the Radio Access Network (RAN). The RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) is being actively developed for 5G RAN automation and optimization. An ecosystem of xApp/rApp, which includes a variety of AI/ML applications running on the RIC platform, is also being created. In this webinar, Dr Choi discussed how AI/ML-based 5G RIC will adapt to the requirements of 6G and the new opportunities it provides to the AI/ML industry.

The video of his talk is embedded below. The main talk starts at 12.15, which is what the embed is set to.
