6GStart White Paper on the Role of 5G & 6G in Transforming Industries

6GStart is an EU funded project that started in May 2022 and finished in July 2024. Its prime objective was to facilitate the preparation activities of the European SNS Initiative, which was established in Q4 2021. The work help maintained the European momentum and leadership in 5G achieved through the 5G PPP to the 6G SNS Initiative.

The second major 6GStart objective was to orchestrate, capture and promote the achievements of the new 6G SNS initiatives and the ongoing 5G PPP by facilitating its activities in the inter-project working groups and maintaining the links to the NetworldEurope community and the 5G IA membership.

On 9 July 2024, the 6GStart project published the whitepaper "The potential of Future Connectivity systems for Vertical Industries: A trend analysis of 5G PPP use cases through the Verticals Cartography."

Through the 5G PPP programme (2014-2023), Europe has been at the forefront of integrating these technologies, viewing the transition as not just technological but as a broad societal transformation. In this context, significant investments have been channelled into research and innovation, standardisation, and the development of practical applications across various sectors. This has included extensive trial and pilot projects to test and refine 5G applications, contributing to the development of an online tool, the Verticals Cartography. This tool maps 5G use cases sponsored by 5G PPP and assesses readiness across different sectors, identifying gaps and trends for future development.  This white paper examines the functionality and impact of the Verticals Cartography tool, detailing its role in tracking 5G advancements. It showcases key datasets on emerging trends to understand industry-specific applications, guide future policy, devise effective industry standards and summarises the final datasets of the 5G PPP Verticals Cartography.

The White Paper is available here.
