As the race toward 6G gains momentum globally, Germany is carving out a leadership role with a clear and forward-looking strategy. The whitepaper, "German Perspective on 6G – Use Cases, Technical Building Blocks and Requirements," produced by the 6G Platform Germany, lays out a detailed roadmap for 6G development, focusing on use cases, technical innovations, and the unique requirements shaping Germany’s approach. Funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), this initiative highlights a distinct German-European vision for the next generation of connectivity.
The white paper emphasizes that 6G isn't just about faster speeds—it's about creating a comprehensive ecosystem. Researchers and industry leaders collaboratively identified eight "Use Case Families" (UCFs), which group applications by their technological and societal needs.
Five of the UCFs are harmonized with existing 6G standardization and analysis efforts to strengthen the overall framework. These include:

- Digital Twins: Enhancing real-world processes with advanced simulations.
- Fully Connected World: Supporting instant communication everywhere.

Germany adds its unique perspective with three new UCFs tailored to local priorities:
- Resilient Society: Connectivity for public safety, security, and disaster response.
- 3D Mobility: Ensuring communication for devices across land, air, and sea.
- Environmental Awareness: Leveraging 6G for sustainable monitoring and climate action.
Achieving these use cases requires a robust foundation of Technical Building Blocks (TBBs)—the core technologies enabling 6G’s transformative potential. The white paper identifies seven key categories comprising 29 essential TBBs:
- AI Integration: Enhancing efficiency and reliability through intelligent networks.
- Comprehensive Network Systems: Modular designs that adapt to diverse needs.
- Advanced Architectures: Seamless interoperability between network types.
- Converged Communication: Incorporating sensing and quantum technologies.
- Cloud-Edge Ecosystems: Optimized for real-time data processing.
- Air Interface Technologies: Supporting high-frequency communication.
- Orchestration and Management: Automating resource and service management.
These technologies will roll out in three phases:
- Phase 1 (2025–2028): Early adoption of essential features.
- Phase 2 (2028–2030): Standardizing advanced capabilities.
- Phase 3 (2030+): Introducing futuristic innovations.
Germany’s approach prioritizes trustworthiness and resilience, addressing public safety and security concerns while fostering sustainability. For instance, Trustworthy Environments demand robust privacy measures, and Resilient Society emphasizes reliable emergency connectivity. These align with Germany's broader focus on digital sovereignty and environmental responsibility.
While the vision is ambitious, several challenges remain:
- Testing complex AI-driven systems.
- Meeting rigorous performance benchmarks like sub-1ms latency.
- Ensuring interoperability across diverse regulatory landscapes.
The white paper also highlights the need for advanced testing methodologies, such as scenario-based validation, to prepare 6G technologies for real-world deployment.
Germany's proactive and collaborative approach, as outlined in the 6G Platform white paper, is trying to position the country as a key player in shaping 6G standards and applications. By focusing on a blend of technological innovation, societal impact, and global collaboration, Germany is setting a high bar for the 6G era.
